Over the past few weeks, news websites have been buzzing with word that iPhone hacker geohot set his sights squarely on the PlayStation 3. His latest post would suggest that he has succeeded in his quest.
I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. I’ve also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip.
3 years, 2 months, 11 days…thats a pretty secure system
Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.
While this may be cause for celebration for some gamers, it’s not going to be welcome news to Sony, who have spent the past three years frequently updating firmware to iron out any and all possible routes of attack through software. But, as a hardware exploit, it would seem this new method cannot be prevented by system updates at this point.
More on this story as it progresses.
And now if calls have restrictions I don’t like, I zap them.
It remains to be seen at this point if anything solid will come of this vector of attack, some speculate that geohot doesn’t have enough experience with reversing to adequately make sense of the data extracted from the various internal components, but we’ll reserve judgement, at least for now.
